Young Mums Doula Support Program
17-07-08 12:52

Are you a young mum expecting a baby? Do you know someone who is? Maybe the YMO Doula Support Program is for you!

What is a doula?

A doula is a trained labor support person who provides emotional and physical support to a laboring woman and her partner. While she is not a medical professional, she can offer a wide range of comfort measures during labor - from massage to aromatherapy to continuous reassurance and coping techniques.

Research has also shown that

  • Your risk of having a cesarean section, forceps delivery, or episiotomy drops.
  • Your ability to cope with the pain improves, decreasing the possibility of needing pain medication.
  • Your relationship with your partner is likely to grow stronger.
  • You're more likely to succeed with breastfeeding your newborn.
  • You're more likely to be confident in your mothering skills.
  • You're more likely to view the birth experience in positive terms.
  • You're more likely to see your body as strong and capable.

Here are some statistics

50% reduction of cesarean rate
25% shorter labor
60% reduction in epidural requests
30% reduction in analgesia use
40% reduction in forceps delivery

Something a doula provides that a nurse and doctor just can not provide is a constant presence. The doctor isn't typically available during labor, and usually shows up right before the birth. Nurses on a labor and delivery unit are tending to the needs of several patients at once, not to mention the paper work and nitty-gritty details of their job. Though many would love to have the time to provide support for the family, this simply isn't practical.

YMO is offering all expectant mothers a chance to have a qualified, experienced Doula for support during your pregnancy, labour, birth and beyond for FREE!

The wonderful Doulas will be offering their services as volunteers because they too were once young mums or they are really passionate about young mums and their choices and rights.
